But I came to this decision, one that I thought over well. This must come as no surprise to those (few) faithfull readers who came and visited my site as I haven't posted anything since May.

But you see, it wasn't worthwhile to continue. It seems as though no one is particularly interested in the political events of the small country located somewhere in the Carpathian Basin, Hungary.

So I bid farewell and leave a few suggestions to those who wish to continue reading about Hungarian events:

-Budapest Sun
www.budapestsun.com

-Budapest Business Journal
www.bbj.hu

-Budapest Post
www.budapestpost.com

If you have any comments you can still leave it here on this blog.
Thanks for your support and understanding:
A.

Art Nouveauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17609930249897585977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8155369655698210523.post-73492143458070114752007-05-23T15:39:00.000+01:002007-05-23T15:48:55.424+01:00Breaking News: Police Officers Not Guilty of Rape ChargesEarlier today DNS tests revealed that the police officers did not rape the 21 year old Zsanett. As is known, five police officers were suspended for allegedly raping the young woman on May 4 while on duty in downtown Budapest.

There have been several conflicting accounts of the story so far; the police officers and their lawyers have said throughout that they were not involved in any sort of physical contact with the woman. One defendant's lawyer did admit, however, that there have been minor offences on the part of the policemen. For example, they didn't write a report and left their precinct when they followed Zsanett home.

This latest finding will certainly have a big impact on the whole political sphere as the main opposition party, Fidesz, had immediately demanded that the justice minister and police chiefs leave office after the rape allegations surfaced - the latest in a string of allegations against members of the force.

Ferenc Gyurcsany, the Hungarian PM, said Sunday that the justice minister had resigned and the national and Budapest police chiefs were dismissed in an effort to restore public confidence in the force after several criminal investigations involving officers.Art Nouveauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17609930249897585977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8155369655698210523.post-49639876816802248252007-05-14T11:52:00.000+01:002007-05-14T12:07:41.916+01:00Teenage Kicks, Thrills
Hungarian University students are becoming more radical, according to a recent survey, with 3% saying that vandalism has a place in political protest, and that they would damage private or public property. SZDSZ planned to celebrate the 1st of May on Hajógyári Sziget as usual - they have been celebrating there for 17 years now - but on Monday during preparations, rowdy supporters of Jobbik coming from their party's program appeared at SZDSZ's tent and threatened workers of the liberal party with knives.

Apparently, the cause of the threat was that Roma (Gypsy) people were also working as staff at SZDSZ. Therefore, one staff member called the police.

As a result, the liberal party has cancelled their program for the 1st of May. SZDSZ does not want their staff and their supporters to be victims of extremist criminals, they explained.

Szabolcs Badacsonyi, an SZDSZ politician explained that SZDSZ has been celebrating at the Island for 17 years, Jobbik has also been celebrating there a couple of years now but there has been no conflict between the two parties until now. No one has been taken into custody, SZDSZ will decide later what they want to do.

Gábor Szabó, Jobbik Party Chairman is delighted that SZDSZ cancelled their program because 'there will be no conflict then', he stated.

(Source: FN, MTI)

Art Nouveauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17609930249897585977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8155369655698210523.post-78090378960877847842007-04-30T16:47:00.000+01:002007-05-14T12:11:34.900+01:00Will the Riots Start Again?
The events of fall could occur again as the society contains the same tensions it contained back in September and October of 2006 - said Gyögy Csepeli, a University Professor and member of the Gönczöl Committee (a politically independent committee which was created in order to investigate the responsibility of the government and the police after the riots. Let's not tolerate that they want us to focus our energy on defending ourselves against false accusations instead of discussing the problems of this country.' Balog added, that the only way people will appreciate the Holocaust more is if we respect each other mutually. What is probably meant by surrealistic is that the radicals were not only dressed in Hungarian medieval clothes and brought with them their now trademark Árpád flag, but a large majority of these people appeared in gas masks also.

There were of course dolls meant to bash the most prominent government members, and many people were shouting 'Frau Mengele' referring to the soon-to-be appointed Minister of Health, Agnes Horvath (her predecessor, Mr. Molnar, was responsible for the implementation of reforms, some of them leading to a few hospitals being shut down - mostly provincial, and/or not vital institutions - and others to be refurnished and improved-ed.) In addition, there were banners titled 'either our dreams will come alive or we will die together.'

Then the famous spokesman of this group, Gyorgy Budahazy, who could not make it to the event since he cannot leave his residence (he is facing many criminal charges-ed.) was able to to broadcast his speech to all those who gathered at Hősök Square. In his speech he said that it is a shame that there are only a handful ready to fight. According to Budaházy, there are two paths the radicals can choose. The first, if they form a party and are elected into parliament. Although, they could get 20% of the votes, but they would then have to work according to the laws of democracy , thus the second solution remains.

'We have to change the regime/social system!' Budaházy said that a shadow regime must be formed called Hunnia which will in time take the place of today's Hungary. For this to happen, there is need for an army, a show of strength, new laws, a new political system, and a new currency.

The other spokesman of the day, Laszlo Toroczkai, said that due to the destruction led by Gyurcsany, 'Hungary has ceased to exist' there's only a plaza (shopping mall) standing in its place. There is no army, national security, money, economy, and a nation left. Because of all this one must unite and create the 'Old Hungary' which working from the inside could soon replace and eliminate the current Hungary, said Toroczkai.

The Old Hungary

People were able to apply for these positions filling out various forms colored green and white after the demonstration ended. There were also red forms for those who did not want to assume any roles yet, but wanted to be citizens of the future State, Hunnia. These citizens will have their own IDs, complete with the Saint Crown of St. Stephen.

According to Toroczkai, there is no need for functions, so nobody could take power to themselves. A community needs to be established. They will then help each other financially so that the new citizens could be financially independent from the old ones. 'We are not demonstrating any longer, but instead building' said Toroczkai.

There were no major incidents, and the demonstration was peaceful, except for the four 'new citizens' who demanded that a picture be deleted from the photojournalist's digital camera...

(Source: Hirszerzo)
Art Nouveauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17609930249897585977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8155369655698210523.post-68085444925298988282007-04-19T14:03:00.000+01:002007-04-19T23:06:08.264+01:00Battle Royale'Hungary is in trouble today, but not because of its citizens but rather because their leaders have flopped', said Viktor Orbán a few weeks ago at a small Hungarian town called Tápióbicske at a National Remembrance.

The leader of Fidesz said in front of an audience of 5000 that the Hungarian people are winners and not losers, like many believe. The Hungarian people are winning important battles day after they as they successfully defend themselves against the attacks of the government; Hungarian families, doctors, teachers, pensioners, and students as well- said Orbán.

The party leader stated that the serious problems that are making life hard for the Hungarians are caused by the new aristocracy that appeared 17 years after the transition, and who are demanding privileges for themselves at the expense of the majority of the nation.

This new aristocracy is trying to rob the country just like the foreign aristocracy wanted to do back in the 19th Century. The Hungarians defeated those foreigners and chased them away - Orbán emphasized.

'We have to defeat this new aristocracy and put an end to privileges of the privileged. Only the NDI has power to investigate the matter and to bring a decision, however. The NDI says it has also monitored these websites and they will be examined.

According to the extremist websites, (run by those responsible for the recent riots-ed.) the 21st of April will be the 'day of the new beginning' ('MÚK') with roads being blockaded, and new demonstrations held, one of them planned to be held at Hősök Square in Budapest. 'MÚK' is the idea of the two known criminals László Toroczkai and György Budaházi who took part in the riots of last year and in the 15th of March riots as well. Recently the Budapest Chief of Police forbade any demonstrations at Hősök Square on the 21st Of April. Toroczkai issued a statement soon after saying that they won't give up.

(Source: MTI)Art Nouveauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17609930249897585977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8155369655698210523.post-30429918300046243982007-04-03T11:21:00.000+01:002007-04-03T14:16:28.920+01:00Egg Throwing at the Soviet Monument in BudapestEggs were thrown on Tuesday morning at people taking part at the Soviet memorial in Budapest. The police were much more professional now than in the last two times; they were able to put an end to the riots and atrocities by lawful means. Luckily, all parliamentary forces seem to agree on this, even though Fidesz is still bringing up the events of 23rd of October as a counter-example. Yesterday in Budapest they discovered an apartment converted into a Molotov cocktail 'factory'. The tenant and maker of the weapons - a 19 year old young man - has been preparing the Molotov cocktails for a month now and was planning to use them tomorrow on the 15th. He also admitted that he is a member of the Kossuth Square Revolutionists. The young man has been taken into custody.

Unfortunately, this was not the only case yesterday. Weapons were found in other districts of Budapest and also in smaller towns across the country. Probably the most shocking finding revealed a whole weapon arsenal consisting of guns, rifles, pistols, flauberts, and also a rarity: a firearm disguised as a cane. Investigations will continue tonight and even tomorrow in the morning before the official celebrations. Police officials are confident that they will be able to seize other weapons before the state celebrations commence.

Source: NOL, MTIArt Nouveauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17609930249897585977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8155369655698210523.post-63796697865384260622007-03-14T00:52:00.000+01:002007-03-14T01:15:25.537+01:00Weapons FoundThe Hungarian police found and seized various weapons at extremist group members' hideout.

Source: EsteArt Nouveauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17609930249897585977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8155369655698210523.post-67802263739611334972007-03-13T00:07:00.000+01:002007-03-13T00:48:35.756+01:00Grand Assembly Held at Kossuth Square by Extremist Demonstrators
They call themselves the Kossuth Square Revolutionists and on Sunday, March 11th they held their first grand assembly. This means that there is no alternative to the reforms. There are lots of debates inside the party, but at the end of the day they say OK let's continue, let's do it.

Die Welt:
In his New Year's speech the Head of State [László Sólyom] said that as a result of last fall's riots the country is split into two camps (a Gyurcsány and an Orbán camp). What do you plan to do against this division?

Gyurcsány:
I have recently written an article in the Hungarian daily, 'Nepszabadsag', where I write about the importance of understanding and appreciating the other side. I have been criticized for this by my supporters. I think we could defeat this schism or division by building a bridge. The pillars of this bridge ought to be be self-criticism, and the understanding of one another. I myself am building these pillars, but I don't see the other side joining in. Nevertheless, I will continue building these pillars; I won't give up.

Die Welt:
Lots of people believe that with the financial burdens brought by these reforms they have to endure even more. Shouldn't you slow down?

Gyurcsány:
In the past eight years the income's purchase value in Hungary has grown by about 50%. This year the purchase value and consumption will plummet somewhat. Naturally, that is painful in a country where the average pension is around 200 Euro, and the average income after taxes is 500 Euro. But there is no alternative because of the budget. All of the concessions that we made were against the advice of the experts: not lowering the pensions and raising family-support accordingly with the inflation rate. In addition, the budget for improving higher-education increased. Next year there will not be any more reduction on earnings. More is not possible.

Die Welt:
You are planning a health care reform in April, if the Parliament votes in favor. How expensive would that be for Hungarians?

Gyurcsány:
On the part of health care reform we have already decided. Capacities will be rebuilt and we have already came up with the solution on how medical services can be improved upon. These services were free until now. When someone had a stomach ache, he or she could go to 20 doctors or check ups and nobody could ask why or how. We thought that this had to be regulated. So now one has to pay a little more then one Euro [1,20] for a visit to the doctor. This is not a comfortable reform, but there are no further decisions affecting the patients directly. The building of a security system has to have a positive outcome for the patients.

WELT:

You argued that you had to implement drastic reforms because nothing was done about it for several years. The Socialists have a joint guilt in the explosion of the deficit, as your predecessor, Péter Medgyessi was heavily involved. Was your 'Lie-speech' aiming at him?

Gyurcsány:
First of all, the 'Lie-speech' was a Truth-speech. What I simply said was that we haven't told the truth since the 1990s. But not the about the details, the budget- but rather about the essence of the Whole. We created the illusion that progress, or headway can be made without any effort. Viktor Orbán [the leader of FIDESZ, ex-PM], Péter Medgyessy [ex-Socialist PM] and Ferenc Gyurcsány, we all haven't made any reforms between 1998 and 2006. We explained that there is no need of reform. What I said in my speech was that this cannot continue. It was a passionate private monologue to my fellow party members, and it naturally sounds very different when interpretted one-sidedly in public.

Die Welt:
Your plan now is to remain strong and wait one year before the elections when the positive effects of the reforms kick in so that you may be reelected. Do you think the Hungarians are this forgetful?

Gyurcsany:
No, but they will realize that their investment has payed off. If you want to conquer a mountain you must first suffer; you can only see the outcome in the end. If you slip off when you are half way up then everything was for nothing. If we will be successful in 2010 that will not mean people forgot about their investment, they will just evaluate it differently.

Die Welt:
Have you thought in the last few months about resigning?

Gyurcsány:
No, never. Not even for a second.

Die Welt:
You have said that you are envious of Austria and Germany for their grand coalition. Is this your goal in Hungary?

Gyurcsány:
We need a lot of time for such a government model to develop in Hungary. In Germany and Austria it is not common for Ms. Merkel and Mr. Beck, or Mr. Gusenbauer and Mr. Schüssel to call each other treasonous. There is a flaw in Hungary where both parties cannot accept that the other is trying everything in its power to achieve the best for the country. This attitude is asymmetric though: in 2002 when [the national conservative] FIDESZ lost the elections the situation was not like it is today. Then the outgoing PM and Chairman of FIDESZ [Viktor Orbán] said that it cannot be that the 'Fatherland is in opposition'! Thus, he put an equal-sign between his party and the country and at the same time asserted that we stand outside of the nation.

Die Welt:
Some political scientists believe that the high tension could only cease if both you and Mr. Orbán would pull out of politics. If he would act accordingly, would you also?

Gyurcsány:
I would have done just that last weekend had the party decided that way. This is the interpretation of Mr. Orbán who has to understand that he is not the Master of life and death, heaven and earth. And if he would decide to step down, who do you think would lead the political right? Political puppets who would act out his orders.

You can read the original German language article here:
http://www.welt.de/welt_print/article745984/Wer_einen_Berg_erobern_will_muss_zuerst_leiden.html
Art Nouveauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17609930249897585977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8155369655698210523.post-62922949405073635722007-03-06T00:45:00.000+01:002007-03-06T01:28:51.678+01:00Ferenc Gyurcsány (PM) interview in 'The Times'Gyurcsány PM and now the Chairman of the Socialist Party (MSZP) said in an interview last week that from Poland to the Balkans there is uncertainty as to whether these countries should follow a progressive modernisation policy, or the isolation of radical nationalism.

To the question whether Hungary has experienced a resurgence of Anti-Semitism since last Autumn Gyurcsány replied with a resounding yes. The waving of Árpád flags (Hungarian National Socialist flags) by the demonstrators at FIDESZ's (the largest opposition party) rallies and at every other demonstration indicates this, as do the Anti-Semitic pamphlets that are being handed out in places such as the University of Law in Budapest.
